Sonatype role-play cheat sheet
For the mock cold call at the end of most SDR interviews.
What they sell, in one line
Tools that find and block risky open source code in software, and enforce rules for what developers can use.
Who you'd be calling
CISOs, Heads of AppSec, DevSecOps and Engineering leaders at large enterprises and federal agencies
Your opener
“Hi, this is [Name] from Sonatype. I know I'm calling out of the blue, got 30 seconds? We help engineering and security teams spot risky open source components before they ship, and I wanted to ask how your team keeps track of that today.”
Problems you solve for them
- Software is built on lots of open source code that may have security holes
- Teams need to prove what's inside their software (SBOMs) for customers and regulators
- Security checks slow developers down when they aren't automated
Discovery questions to ask
- How does your team check the open source code your developers pull in?
- If a new vulnerability like Log4j hit tomorrow, how fast could you find where you use it?
- Do customers or regulators ask you for a list of what's inside your software?
Objections they'll throw at you
“I'm busy right now.”
→ Understood, I'll keep this short. Can I ask one question about open source risk, then you decide if we should book time?
“We're not interested.”
→ Fair enough. Most security teams assume it's handled until a big vulnerability hits. Do you feel confident you know every open source component you ship?
“We already use something for security scanning.”
→ Good, that's a must-have. Does it also control what developers can pull in and manage your repositories? Worth 15 minutes to compare?
“Just send me an email.”
→ Sure thing. To keep it relevant, is your bigger concern vulnerabilities, compliance, or developer speed? And can we set a quick follow-up after you've read it?
Competitors worth knowing
Snyk, Mend, JFrog, Black Duck
Interview tips for this company
- Learn plain definitions of 'open source', 'vulnerability', 'SBOM' and 'software supply chain', and mention Nexus Repository as their well-known product.
- Know the Log4j story as a simple example of why this matters: one hidden open source piece put thousands of companies at risk.
