Paychex role-play cheat sheet
For the mock cold call at the end of most SDR interviews.
What they sell, in one line
Handles payroll, HR software and outsourced HR help for small and mid-sized businesses.
Who you'd be calling
Owners, office managers, finance managers and HR managers at small and mid-sized businesses, roughly 5 to 500 employees.
Your opener
“Hi [Name], this is [You] from Paychex. I know I'm calling out of nowhere. Got a quick minute? I work with local business owners who want to spend less time on payroll and HR paperwork.”
Problems you solve for them
- Payroll takes hours and mistakes cost money
- Keeping up with tax and labor rules is stressful
- Small teams have no dedicated HR person
Discovery questions to ask
- How do you run payroll today: in-house, a spreadsheet, or another provider?
- How much time does it take each pay period?
- Who handles HR questions, hiring paperwork and benefits for you?
Objections they'll throw at you
“I'm busy right now.”
→ Totally get it, running a business is busy. Can I call back at a better time, maybe tomorrow morning?
“We're not interested.”
→ No worries. Is that because payroll is working well for you, or because you haven't had time to look at it?
“We already have a payroll provider.”
→ That's great that it's handled. Are you happy with the service and the price, or is there anything you'd change?
“Just send me an email.”
→ Of course. So I don't send something useless, how many employees do you pay, and is it payroll or HR you care about more?
Competitors worth knowing
ADP, Gusto, Paycom, Paycor
