Broccoli role-play cheat sheet
For the mock cold call at the end of most SDR interviews.
What they sell, in one line
AI phone agents that answer calls, book jobs and follow up with leads for home service contractors.
Who you'd be calling
Owners and office managers at small plumbing, HVAC, electrical and roofing companies.
Your opener
“Hey Mike, this is Alex, I'll be quick since I know you're probably on a job site. Quick question: when your phones ring and nobody can pick up, what happens to that call?”
Problems you solve for them
- Missed calls mean lost jobs, especially when techs are on-site or it's after hours
- Hiring and paying a receptionist or dispatcher is expensive
- Leads go cold because nobody follows up quickly
Discovery questions to ask
- Roughly how many calls do you miss in a week, especially after hours or during busy season?
- Who answers the phones today, and what does that cost you?
- What happens with a new lead that doesn't book on the first call?
Objections they'll throw at you
“I'm busy, I'm on a job.”
→ No problem, I'll be 20 seconds. If I call back at 4 pm, would that work better?
“Not interested.”
→ Fair enough. Just so I understand, do you feel like you're catching every call that comes in, or do some slip through?
“I already have an answering service or a receptionist.”
→ Great, then you know how much a call is worth. Does that person cover nights, weekends and overflow when the lines are busy?
“Send me an email.”
→ Sure thing. What's the best email, and would a quick 10-minute demo next week be better than reading a long message?
Interview tips for this company
- Practice talking to blue-collar business owners: short, direct, no buzzwords, and respect that they're often on a job.
- Be ready to explain the value in dollars: one missed HVAC or plumbing call can be worth hundreds or thousands.
